If you rap on the side of the gas grill tank, you will be able to tell if it is full. A full tank will make a noise like a solid thump, whereas a tank that is not full or is empty will make a distinguishable echo. Or you can check the propane tank as well.

After lifting the tank, if it's heavy then it's full. Thumping is good way too. A full tank makes solid thump. Checking the pressure can also help.

Usually if the tank is light and easy to pick up, it means that it is empty or very close to being empty. You can take it a place that fills tanks and they can tell you if it needs refilled or not.

The most accurate way is to weigh it. On the side of the tank should be a mark TW followed by a number. That's the tank empty tank weight. Propane weighs 4.23 lbs/gal. Subtract the empty weight from the current weight to determine the remaining gas.

One way is simply to pick up the tank. Is it heavy? If so, you've got a full tank. Another way you can gauge tank level is to tap on it with your hand. If the tank makes a solid sound, it is full. If it makes a ringing sound, it is empty.

Weigh it. The "20-pound" tanks that you normally use for a gas grill weigh about 35-38 pounds according to Blue Rhino's website.

Turn on the valve, listen for a hissing noise. Also, the weight of the tank should be substantial, showing the tank fullness.
