The gauge could have failed or the sending unit in the gas tank may have failed. It could also be a broken or disconnected wire. Also, check the fuses.

Sounds to me, that you might have a bad sending unit in your car. The sending unit 'tells' you car how much gas you have in your tank. If you sending unit doesn't have the right electrical resistance it will read wrong.

The most common causes of a gas gauge failure are typically bad wiring or a bad sending unit. Do a check of the wiring to make sure it has tight connection and solid grounds. Then you might need to go into the tank and replace the sending unit.

If you are having gas gauge failure then you will need to check all of your pumps. They may be getting clogged or they might almost be ripped or torn.
