How do you change a head gasket?

depending on the vehicle its a pretty big project, and depending on what cause the gasket to fail you might need to have the head machined flat which requires a machine shop. Its not an average back yard mechanics project. the actual gasket is cheap the labor is where the cost is

The motor is first disassembled so the head can be removed. Then the head is unbolted and removed. The surface is cleaned and the new on is installed.
