car repairs

Question by  Ben (23)

How much will it cost me to replace a head gasket?

I need a new one and I don't have much money.

Answer by  Mark15 (94)

Depending on what type of vehicle and what year it is, a head gasket replacement could cost anywhere from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars. It's almost always more expensive at the dealer, so try to use an independent shop.

Head gaskets are generally cheap, but you will need exhaust gaskets and an intake as well. -And you should have your head and deck checked to make sure that they aren't warped. (If you do it yourself.) Follow the torquing sequence carefully and, have fun at it.

Close to $500-$1800 and that is if a mechanic shop is doing the work.If you are doing the repair it will cost about $30-$100 plus a whole day.

Well this really depends on a lot of different things. Without knowing the year and model of car I can't give you an accurate idea of price. You need to contact a shop for an estimate. To save money you can replace the gasket yourself but it can be quite a big job to undertake.

The average cost of the parts to replace the head gasket is around 300-400 dollars. Labor takes about 7-9 hours so expect to pay around 1200-1600 dollars.

Your looking at about 100-200 depending on where you buy the parts. You can check online on craigslist to get a good deal. Sometimes you can get some partially used or new ones for a very good price. Go through ebay as well as there are some deals on there as well.

Head gaskets can be a costly repair depending on year, model and engine of the car , i would recommend you get estimates from a few different automotive repair shops and go from there depending on your budget. It usually requires removal of the air intake, spark plus wires and other sensors or wiring running along that area.
