How do you care for wisteria?

I want to cultivate it up a trellis and across a lattice roof over the patio.

Make sure the roots are in the shade and the leaves in the sun. Feed with well rotted manure or fertiliser in spring. Prune the leaves in Winter.

Usually wisteria needs little attention other than some pruning to keep it within bounds and an area that is partly sunny. If you live in an aree where it grows easily, make sure you get a variety that won't take over your home. Some types of wisteria, especially in the south, can actually ruin a roof.

Prune/trim it back FREQUENTLY. Many species of Wisteria vines have an invasive way of "taking over" and choking/damaging other plants & structures. There is a Wisteria in California measuring more than an acre and weighing about 250 tons. So your trellis & lattice-patio-roof need to be sturdily-constructed (4"x4" timbers).

The most important thing you can do for wisteria is to prune it twice a year, once in early Spring and again in Summer. Wisteria thrives in full sun and will wrap themselves around anything they touch, so keep a close eye on them and trim back whenever they attempt to grow anywhere other than on your lattice or trellis.
