How do you calculate how much an item is marked up?

Answer by  amswplusone (652)

To get the markup, divide the price it is selling for by the price the business paid for it. That result is what you multiplied the original by to get the result. So, for example, an item at 5. 59 that cost 3. 49 yields 1. 6, so there's a 60% markup.

You would find out how much the item costs and then subtract it from what there charging you. The number you get is how much they marked up the item.
