To drain the fuel system, first depressurize the line. Make sure you have a pan underneath the car. Using the correct tools, use an air compressor to blow the gasoline out through an opening in the line.

You will need to locate the petcock. Unscrew this and wait for the flow to come. Make sure the ignition switch is not turned on , and that the vehicle is not running. This could lead to explosion and maybe death. Once there is no more fuel coming out, you have completed.

Go to the underhood fuse panel and locate the fuse for the fuel pump it may be listed as "Fuel" or "EFI". Remove the fuse carefully with a pair of needle nose pliers. Start the car; it will choke down and stall quickly. Now remove the gas cap, and pressure should be released.

Make sure the filter is filled with diesel and install. Loosen the lines at the injectors and crank the engine for several seconds. Compressing air into the tank can help.

I don't know why you would need to but I imagine you could unhook the feed line from the fuel rail and let it pump until fuel comes out. Then simple reattach the line. I think any air present in the system after the pump wouldn't cause a problem in the first place.
