How do you become a master electrician?

Master electricians come up though the ranks. In general, you join the electrician's union, and get trained. First you're an apprentice. After a certain number of hours worked you pass a test to be a journeyman. After more hours, you must pass another test to be a master.

You'll find lots of information about the requirements, including classroom hours, apprenticing, licensing and what is involved in advancing to the level of master electrician. It takes a lot of hard work and studying.

You must go through a multi-year apprenticeship program to become an electrician. Journeyman is the highest level of electrician. Your local community or technical college may offer such a program.

You need a two year degree, minimum, to start with. Then you must complete an apprenticeship, where you train under a master electrician. Count on at least six years of training.
