Go to your start menu and click "run", and type in "regedit" (without the quotes). Go to File > Export and save the .reg file somewhere appropriate and memorable. If you ever need to recover it, simply go back into regedit and go to File > Import

One particularly reliable method for registry backup is to select a portion of the registry by editing a key area and exporting file. This applies to Windows XP. The procedure is to run the registry editor with regedit.exe. Locate the particular key to be edited, click 'File', 'Export', navigate to a subfolder, and enter a file name.
