How do spider monkeys do as pets?

Although I have not had a spider monkey as a pet, I think that it would be safer to have a more common domestic animal as a pet.

I had a spider monkey when I was a teenager. There are cute but they need to be caged. Also, the monkey has a bad smell that is impossible to get rid of. I also don't think the monkey can be totally tamed. We loved him but the bad odor was a big drawback.
