Depending on the area you live in, it may or may not be legal to own a spider monkey. Check with your local city or state rules and regulations. Exotic animal lists change by demographic and while most places consider spider monkeys exotic, you may be able to own one.

Many areas consider any type of ape to be exotic so you need to call your city government and ask. You may need a special permit. A spider monkey is a nice pet but they have an odor that never goes away. The monkey needs to be kept in some kind of confinement because on their own they are destructive.
