How do sales of Xbox compare to those of PlayStation 2?

The Xbox was discontinued in late 2006 while the PS2 is still going strong. Worldwide sales of the Xbox were about 24 Million units, PS2 is at around 150 Million, beating the Xbox by a factor of seven. The PS2 actually is the bestselling console of all time.

The PlayStation 2 sold a lot more consoles than the Xbox. The later one only sold something over 24 million units, while the PS2 still remains the best selling console of all time, with over 140 million console sold.

The original Xbox sold 25 million units while the PS2 has had over 130 million lifetime sales. It is important to remember that Microsoft stopped producing the Xbox once the Xbox 360 was released and PS2s are still in production as of 2010.

In 2003, Playstation 2 sales were much higher than Xbox sales (Ps2 had 9.4 million, while Xbox had 3.4 million). Now that the Xbox 360 has come out and the Playstation 2 is "last generation", I would expect that the 360 would have better sales than the PS2 just because it is a new system.

This was already determined when those two were released. The PlayStation 2 had more sales when it was released than the Xbox, but Xbox was not far behind.
