When it comes to using gateways, routers, modems, etc - the best plan of action would be to contact the manufacturer directly and ask, as each is different.

I would typically set up the two routers separately and then set them both up as VPNs and throw a repeater in between them.

You need to connect the gateway between the routers using a CAT 5 Cable in the main output and input ports on each router.
