Why does my router seem to slow down the DSL connection?

You probably have a defective encrypting algorithm. It takes the router processor a long time to encrypt the data, if you have the option activated.

Your router creates an extra stop for packets of information travelling from one place on the internet to your computer. If you remove the router, you remove one more machine that information must travel through to reach you.

Routers will filter much of the incoming data and will also keep people out that are trying to access your computer for malicious reasons. Routers check incoming packets to make sure that they match what has been requested by your computer, therefore the router may slow traffic down but in the long run, you are safer for using it.

The most common cause of this would be an old or broken router. Also, many DSL modems have an internal router already built in. When you use an additional router, and NAT (Network Address Translation) is enabled on both, it results in "Double NAT'ing", which can reduce performance. Try disabling the NAT functionality in either your router or the modem's.

It could be that your router is old and no longer supported. In that case, you should be glad you can get anything with the router. I used to be using a ten year old router without realizing it and it was awfully slow. After switching to a new one, things have been going wonderful.

Well since a router is a complex thing. It has to direct data flow among computers and by it nature it can slow a connection down. It may also be that your router has unnecessary setting turn on or is just out of date.
