First try a soft-reset by holding the menu and center buttons at the same time. If this fails, connect the iPod to iTunes and reset it via the software.
To start off with, try to see if your ipod is on standby mode, and if not, then hold the menu button with the play button down, while moving the ipod into standby mode. It should unfreeze.
