The distributor cap is usually held down with two clamps and has the wires connected to it, remove clamps and wires, pull off cap and replace with new one.
Unplug the spark plug wires and unscrew the cap. Inside you will find the rotor, it will need to be replaced along with the plugs and wires when replacing the cap.
Open hood and go to the distributor. Remove only the coil wire from the old distributor cap. Remove the screws that are holding it on. Place the new cap where the old cap was. Transfer the wires that are still on the old cap. Put the coil wire on the cap.
the distributor cap should be mounted to the engine with several screws. once removed the cap can be pulled straight off of the distributor and the rotor and contacts inside the distributor can be inspected for wear and possibly replaced.
