How do I refinish wood in black lacquer?

The trick is in the prep. After your wood is clean and free from any residue, paste fill the grain and then prime the wood with a high quality lacquer primer. At this time, use a putty such as for cars to fill any nicks or imperfections. Sand your patches out and then spray several coats lacquer until finished look is achieved.

Sand the piece down to a smooth starting point. It may not be necessary to remove the old finish completely. Apply your new black finish and sand lightly between coats with 180 or 220 grit paper. I recommended 3 black coats. Apply a sealer or lacquer over the black, at least 2 coats, sanding lightly between them.

Take some sandpaper and sand the wood til smooth. Take the black lacquer and brush it on the wood. Let dry. Sand again and brush on the second coat of black lacquer. Let it completely dry. probably for 48 Hrs. Take varnish or poly and brush a thin coat on. Let this also dry for about 48 hours.

Sand the wood smooth. Apply the lacquer and let it dry. Then sand it down again. Once again, apply the lacquer and let it dry. You'll have to sand after each layer. You'll know when you're happy with the color, but 7 coats is about right.

Use a tack rag to remove any bits of dust before putting on the final coat of lacquer. You can use a Deft brushstroke lacquer too. this lacquer will make a pleasing opaque, yet shiny coat on the wood. However, it has been reviewed that it is not good at resisting water.

Sand the wood evenly and use as much soft cloth as needed to remove ALL dust. Apply thin layers of letting each one dry completely until desired color is reached.
