How do I position electrical receptacles on a kitchen island?

They work best on the ends towards the top. You want to place them in spots where you are going to need them.

I placed my electrical receptacle on the left side on the base of the island. This keeps the top of the counter safer because cords are not in the way. I also placed the receptable there because on the left side I have more workspace on the counter top for appliances and cooking.
