How should I go about restaining kitchen cabinets?

You will need a power sander to remove all the stain and paint from them, and also take off all the hardware and take down the doors. Sand completely, then stain or pain as you want them, then put the doors back up, install new hardware, and there you are.

Stain soaks into the wood, so if you want to sand off the existing stain, you will have to remove more than just the surface layer. For this reason, most people resurface cabinets, which means that you are adding a layer of veneer (which is a thin sheet of wood).

If they aren't too thin , sand the old stain off and then put on the new one. If they're on the thin side, use stain remover first.
