If he brings a textbook to and from school, you could read some of his chapters and try to understand the material so that you can work with him. Also, you could talk to his teacher to see if you could get some recommendations about good study habits.

Try to obtain a copy of your son's textbook- if not from the school, then you may can find an inexpensive copy on the internet. Read the chapters, making notes as you read. Also many textbooks have online resources from which you may get suggestions. Study your child's class notes.
