The only way to confirm a staph infection is by sending a swab to the lab for culture. In many cases, a physician can identify a bacterial infection (which is what staph is) and treats it accordingly. But a culture is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

Staphlococcus aureas exists in humans as a bacterial skin flora, and its presence may not always need treatment. If you get an infected wound and suspect a staph infection, you will need to have cultures taken. Staph infections can only be confirmed by a lab test by your physician.

Only testing can make this determination. There are so many places the infection can occur. However, if you have boils, pus producing sores or an abcess or redness it could be skin staph. Infection of the bowls consist of diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Toxic shock syndrome is also a staph infection indicated by high fever and/or a rash.
