You must file a declaration of paternity within the court in your area. A DNA test may need to be ordered to confirm paternity if the parents are not married at the time of the child's birth. For more information contact the office of vital statistics in your county or city.

You need to file to amend the orginal birth certificate. You will also have to give the reason why and have proof like a DNA test.

Google "birth certificate MA" to get the details for Massachusetts. You will need legal documentation to prove your claim. eHow has a good article on the subject.

Any time you go to add a father's name you will either need to file for a DNA test or for adoption. The courts will have the fathers named added.
