Some five year olds are not mature enough to handle kindergarden, while yes we send all our five year olds to school beacuse they are five, it does not mean they are truly ready to be there.

At the age of 5, attention spans do vary quite a bit. However, a child should have the ability to hold their attention on an activity for at least 15 minutes. If this is something that your child is unable to do (without the flashing lights of TV or the video game console), try exercises at home.

It is important for 5 year olds to get interested in the people they interact with. A parent can arrange a meeting with a kindergarden teacher and her pupil and make it more personal. This will reinforce a one on one relationship even though a techer will have a classroom.

At this age kids just don't really have a big attention span. Bribing isn't always a good thing but you could tell your child that if he does better in school you will reward him. You can always set up meetings with his teacher to check his progress. Teachers often will talk to to you on the phone as well.
