I would suggest searching on-line for strategies. Often you can look on-line through google and find the answers to many "how to" questions. There are people that hire just for jobs like this. SOmetimes living in Big Cities, or a specific region is required. Do your research online you will have success.

First, start a blog where you discuss your opinions and political views. Try and get it shared and published as much as possible. Submit papers to be published in academic political journals. Then write letters to existing think tanks you would like to join, refer to your work, and explain how you would help the think tank achieve its goals.

People who work for think tanks are either former politicians or people who are the top experts in their respective fields. If you are serious about wanting to work for a think tank, you should get a doctorate in your subject and then either get a job at a top university or write a famous book.

Most think tanks only employ people who are highly educated in their field, and usually they have already had years of successful employment in the specific field they are hired for. I would suggest becoming highly respected in your field first, then make contacts within think tanks.

One option is to network with those in local universities; many professors also consult with think tanks. Another option is to review papers written by think tanks and locate one in your area, then offer to write for them. You could also review the non-profit job listings in your area, since think tanks are considered non-profit.

In general, you will need a Phd in whatever your field of specialty is. For the large, well-known think tanks, the positions are very competitive - it is necessary to show that you have done some substantial independent research prior to applying for the job.

In order to get a position in a think tank, you would first have to be recognized as an expert in your field. Typically this would be in some form of political science but could also be military, economics, business and finance, or science and technology.
