How do I dispose of old kitchen knives?

There are no restrictions upon simply throwing them away. However, it would be better to donate them to your local Goodwill or other charity. You could get a tax deduction, and they can usually sharpen them enough to sell them.

I would suggest placing them in a container which is impermeable and then throwing them out with the trash. A large heavy plastic container such as a detergent bottle with a screw cap would work well. Make sure the cap is on tight so that the garbage haulers will not accidentally get stuck.

If the knives are still good I would donate them to a church that helps feed the homeless. They are always looking for kitchen tools.

I put them in an open cardboard box (contained and visible) with a note reading "KNIVES" and my recyle guy takes them away without getting damaged.

You should bend the blade of old kitchen knives so they are not as likely to cut anything or anyone. You can bend the blade in a vise or if you do not have one, stand on the blade with your foot and pull the handle up with your hand. Then throw the knife away.
