The traditional shape for a Japanese Maple Tree is an umbrella shape and low to the ground. Trimming the tree to fit this basic shape will be correct.

Prune anytime, but fall and winter are best. Remove crossing or rubbing branches, dead branches, and diseased branches. Do not remove more than a third of the tree's crown in a season. Remove lower branches until you have any needed clearance. For shaping the crown, prune just past a bud tht is aiming the right direction.

Trim in a manner that shapes the tree like a light bulb. Trim all branches that lead to the ground. Never make top cuts. Always make cuts at a Y or at the base. Do not leave any stubs.

Well to correctly trip the Japanese tree you take it by it's roots and then cut off at the trim bases of the tree. Just make sure you take extra precaution though. When cutting the tip, you don't want to peel too much off. Just have it ready and snip the bottom.

Pinch out unwanted shoots using good clippers which are sterilized in bleach solution in the first three years gradually to make good shape, natural size and good view and avoid over stressing.
