First, you must become a police officer. During the course of police work, you will have an opportunity to continue learning in specialized areas. When positions open up on SWAT, you can apply. Superiors must support the application and be willing to make qualified recommendations about why you would be a good addition to the team.

People usually join the military and them move up through the ranks. It is very difficult to become a member of the SWAT team.

If you haven't done this in the military, you need to really pay your dues and prove yourself on your police force- you need to ask your HR person for appropriate training, and take applicable courses, often psychology courses are required. This's a tough job with intensive training and schooling.

You first have to be a Police Officer. Once you are, you generally have to work for at least five years until you can apply to that unit (or any other unit for that matter). Some forces don't have a swat team though, so you should look into that before applying to a specific force.

The general path would be to begin as a law enforcement officer. Then attempt through training and skill attempt to join the SWAT team. I am sure that weapons training the militry service would be an excellent skill to have to make your goal more reachable
