There are lots of different types of counseling: addiction, mental health, marriage, school or career guidance, etc. At a minimum, a background in social work and/or psychology is required.

No matter what kind of counseling you want to do, you'll almost certainly need a master's degree in social work, clinical psychology or some other type of counseling, gain supervised clinical experience (requirements vary by state) and obtain a license to work as a counselor in your state.
