A generator is basically a fuel engine which drives a big dynamo. To generate electricity, you start the engine. The energy of this is transformed into movement. This movement turns a dynamo, and the dynamo gives off the electrical power.

As far as I am concerned, the generator is a machine that transfer the energy of motion to the energy of electricity. Its working process is just the opposite of the electromotor.
