Sonic wasn't really ahead of it's time. Compared to the 3DO, it was relatively weak technology and the size of the games were much smaller than one would think.
The creators were greatly inspired by the television show pokemon. The creators decided to pick a hedgehog for the mainharactrr and give it special powers similar to a pokemon's power.
