Taupe is the French word for mole, which are a gray-brown color. Eventually, the name became associated with the color.
The work taupe may come from the Latin word for mole - "talpa". As most moles are brownish-gray in color, we get the color taupe.
Answer by Shifter (96)
Taupe originally referred to the average color of the French mole. The name expanded due to the color of a mole varying from from gray through yellowish, brownish, and purplish.
