Hannibal had a force of over 40,000 soldiers, and only 37 elephants. Most of these were infantry, who, presumably, walked across the Alps. Eight thousand were cavalry, mounted on horses. The elephants, were, presumably ridden by their handlers, who rode them into battle. As the general in command, however, Hannibal most likely rode a horse.

Hannibal is perhaps most famous for his crossing of the Alps to reach Italy and attack Rome. He led an army of almost 100 000 and brought with him elephants to intimidate the enemy. Although he is often depicted riding an elephant, Hannibal and his generals most likely travelled on horseback.
