There's a reason tried and true methods are popular, and that's because they work. With something this important, especially if you can't guess the reaction, you may not want to go cutesy. If you know before hand that he will be thrilled, why not throw him a congratulatory party for a father to be?

You can cook him a "special" dinner but all the contents can be "baby" items such as a stir fry with baby carrots, baby corn and baby snap peas. Also eat on small plates and give him a kid sized cup. He will wonder why and you can say "just practicing for when the baby gets here! "
