By studying the last pair of big legs on a hermit crab you may determine it's sex. Two large openings here means it's a female.

Hang the crab and out of the shell and take a look at the last big pair of legs.If it has got two openings (gonopores),then its a female crab.

The female land hermit crab has tiny genital openings called gonopores. The gonopores are located on the first segment of the back pair of walking legs.
