How do tell if a hermit crab is male or female?

This is pretty tricky with a hermit crab. You may have to wait until the next time it leaves it's home, as you need to look at the joints where the rear legs meet the shell. If they have holes, then you've got a girl, if not, it's a boy.

You can tell based on it's interior organs. If it has an extra organ at the mouth then you know that your hermit is actually a male. If you can't tell, take it to the vet.
