Unless you have a strong background in music theory and know how chords are constructed, it's probably best to find a teacher to cover the basics. If you're comfortable with theory, then there are several books and instructional videos that are helpful. Just put "learn to play guitar" into google or amazon and several will come up.

There are many books and DVDs that you can use to teach yourself how to play the guitar. I recommend Learn and master guitar; its a bit pricey but well worth it. If you are low on cash, try jamorama or the Troy Stetina Guitar Series. The only way to get good on the guitar is focused practice. Good luck.
