I have straight As, but some kids have a 4.1.

Some GPA calculations add an extra point for honors and/or Advanced Placement(AP) classes. They might be getting 5 points instead of 4 for an "A" in these more challenging classes.

Honors classes often offer a higher GPA scale for receiving an "A", like 4.2 or 4.3 as opposed to a 4.0. The rationale is that getting a "B" in an honors class is equivalent to getting an "A" in a non-honors class. Students are rewarded for taking a more challenging class in this model.
