Doing a web search will tell you the accredidation level, degrees offered, and even what the school is proud of. You can also contact whoever handles public relations to find out what your school is known for and what programs are the best, most popular, and have the highest enrollment.

Good places to learn more about a college include newspapers, magazines, and web sites. US News and World Report offers ratings on top colleges. Wikipedia is a good starting source.
