For box turtles, the tails on males are thicker at the base (where it joins the body) than for females. Male's tails are longer, and the anus is further down the length of the tail than for females.

It depends on a few factors, but there are mainly two way in which you can tell by yourself if it is a male or female (not accurate). first, concave bottom shell - male. Second, big space between the bottom shell and top shell in the tail zone - female. Best way to determine is a blood examination.

Sexing turtles (or determining the sex of a turtle) depends on the particular species of turtle you have. You can find visual guides first to determine the species of your turtle, then to sex your turtle, in a library.

It generally depends on the breed of the turtle. In many cases the a full grown female turtle is bigger then a full grown male turtle. Box turtles are generally the easiest to determine the sex. Male box turtles have an indent in the bottom of their shell females do not. It mainly depends on the breed of turtle.

Males typically have much longer fore claws, a shorter, stubbier tail, and underside of the shell is also slightly concave, all of which helping the male to hold the female during mating. In contrast, the female usually has a longer tail and the underside of the shell is slightly more convex.

Flip the turtle over - if the shell is concave (dips in), it's probably a boy, and if it's convex (bumps out) it's probably a girl.
