Roses need several things to remain healthy. They should be supplied with proper nutrients. There are products made specifically for roses. They also need regular pruning and should be trimmed back quite a bit at the end of the growing season.

To protect from winter weather clean dead leaves, stems, and other debris from bushes and ground area. Tie limbs together with strong twine and cover with heavy plastic.

Wrap paper or plastic around the rose bush, for the winter, to keep from freezing. Another solution is to place a pail over the bush, if small, so that heavy snow does not break the stems down. To protect from insects, use rose fertilizer with bug killer.

If you are inquiring about winter months, wrap in burlap. If not, cut the bushes back and fertilize with rose fertilizer early in spring and before they bloom.

The most effective way is to attack aphids head on. You must pull the aphid from the bush and squash them to prevent their return.

Rose bushes can be protected by adding two to three inches of mulch around the base. This will help to keep the moisture in the soil.
