The first step in preparing to paint the bathroom baseboards is to throughly clean the boards with any household cleaner. Let dry. Scrape or sand any loose paint chips. Prime areas that are bare wood. Paint with oil base paint. It might take a little longer to dry but it is well work the effort.

First you will want to mask any areas that you do not want to paint, like the floor and the walls. This can be done a few ways. You can cover the floors with a tarp and tape newpaper to the wall to mask any area you do not want paint on.

Place a plastic sheet across the floor so no paint falls on it. Next get some blue painters tape and tape off the area above the baseboard. Next take the blue tape and tape off the floor below the baseboard. You should only have to do one strip above and below baseboard to protect wall and floor. Now paint.

Clean them well with cleaner that does not leave much residue (TSP, etc) then be sure to rinse them and let them dry. Fill in any caulking or other patching that is needed and sand smooth. The using masking tape tape off the edges of what needs to be painted and place a cover on the floor.
