In order for 2 cats to get along they must gradually spend time together in order to start to feel comfortable with each other. Start by putting them on opposite sides of a screen door so that they can be within inches from each other but with a barrier.

You should provide two separate areas with litter trays, and two separate areas with food/water. This prevents them from competing for these resources so much. If they are not neutered, you should do this. Keep them apart and re-introduce them slowly over several weeks, started with other-cat scented objects. There's also a product called Feliway you can look into.

To help cats get along, you should put them close together with supervision let them sniff each other and let them get to know each other at there own pace.

The first thing is to get them both spayed/neutered if they're not already, that will usually help. Make sure each cat has its own space to be alone, that way they won't feel like they're being forced to cohabitate in an environment too close together.

If one is a "newer" addition to the home, it would be wise to take them out of the house and thoroughly clean it, thus erasing many of the territory markings the original cat has set up. Otherwise, they tend to get over it after a while.
