You can get more sunlight in your apartment by opening shades/curtains. Always make sure that apartments you rent are facing directions where the sun rises and have plenty of windows.

Because renters usually don't have the right to make major modifications to an apartment, increasing light must be achieved through more superficial means. Some possible ideas might be to remove foliage or plants from around windows, change the type of blinds on the windows, or add a mirror near a window to reflect more light.

In order to get more sunlight in your particular apartment I would most likely decide to install some type of window.
