The best way to gain photography experience is to simply always have your camera on you. Constantly be taking photos, and work towards compiling at least one portfolio. Volunteer for your local newspaper, and see what you can't dig up that nobody else has in your town.

Adult education programs offer fun or professional classes, and sometimes there are photo workshops at vacation spots -- I went on a "photo safari" at Yellowstone Park. You'll get lots of tips from people with experience. Attend photo exhibits and take note of what you really like. Take lots of pictures: you'll discover it's about learning to see!
