First start with a simple shape like a sphere. Look to see where your light source is coming from. You will see the shadow on the sphere and the surface that it is sitting on. Those areas will be shaded in. The area farthest away from the light source will be black and in shades of gray toward the light.

The best way to improve you skills at anything art related is to just practice as much as you can. Also try drawing different things as well as drawing on different paper. It can also help to read some book about charcoal drawing techniques. Eventually you will get better.

charcoal drawing, like any kind of drawing, requires a solid set of core fundamentals. Focus on contours FIRST and then shading later. Especially with charcoal, it becomes easier to add in shadows rather than take them away. Practice first with a regular paper and pencil (ebony pencils work GREAT for laying out charcoal-like designs) and then go from there.
