Well, you need to complete your 8000 hours of electrical work to get the license. Usually, a few letters of reference indicating that you have completed the hours will suffice.

In Ontario, Canada you follow a course of classroom training, usually at a Community College. Then you enter into a real job, working with a Master in your trade, for example a Master Plumber, for a period of working hours ( they vary depending on trade ) usually 2000 hour plus, to become qualified to write your trade exams.

Check your state's requirements. Some states require job shadowing a master electrician or require training through a college or apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship lasts usually three to five years with an exam at the end. Once the apprenticeship is completed, you will be granted Journeyman status and issued a license.

Journeyman is a designation usually given to highly educated and skilled workers in various vocations, such as electricians. To get such a designation you usually have to go through a lengthy apprenticeship and pass certain tests.
