There are several books on this subject. Check out: The Definitive Book of Body Language by Barbara Pease. It's available at Amazon.

To better understand body language, you must take a close look at how your friends, family or colleagues behave in certain situations. It's easier to look at first at people you know well and that you can understand easily. After some training you can challenge with newly known people.

In my opinion, the movements we make with our body (arms, hands, head, etc.) are made unconsciously. However, most scholars who work on body language tend to agree on the meanings of those movements. That being so, an excellent way to better understand body language could be to read some specific books on the matter.

You might look for books on this subject. The most important thing you need to do is pay close attention: to yourself, then to others. What postures, gestures and facial expressions do you use as you listen, as you speak, and in various settings? What do you think your body language means and conveys? Then turn your attention to others.
