Different species come in various sizes; most get about as big as a human finger, with very few getting bigger than your thumb.

The size of a caterpillar depends on the its species. Monarch butterfly caterpillars can grow up to 2 inches long, whereas a the Graphium sarpedon (Common Bluebottle Butterfly) caterpillar only grows to about 3cms.
