They receive basic obedience skills, are shown how to track human scent but ignore animals, water searching by boat, and navigation over difficult terrain such as logs.

They are trained, starting when they are a puppy, by certified dog handlers. The dogs are trained to recognize the scent of a deceased person. Because it can take years to train a cadaver dog, most certified dog handlers do it on a volunteer basis (which is different from being a certified dog trainer to help control pets).

Cadaver dogs are trained to pick out the scent of decomposing human flesh. They are trained as "air scent" dogs

There are techniques for training cadaver dogs that are published for law enforcment, however there are scens that are sold to those certified to train these dogs to do their jobs, these scents are very similiar to the smell of decomposing bodies, with this training they are able to locate whole bodies, as well as, body parts.
