While Medicare does pay for chemotherapy treatment, other medication costs must be paid by the consumer through personal insurance, self pay, or the government Part D program of Medicare. There are many options in the Part D program. Your pharmacist can offer guidance into which insurance to choose.

Medicare Part A, inpatient hospital or nursing facility care, and B, outpatient medical care, do not. Medicare Part D does. You need to have Medicare in order to get Part D. Generally, Part D requires you to pay $35 monthly, with an annual deductible of $250, for 75% coverage up to $2250 and then 95% coverage for cost over $5100.

Original part A and B Medicare pays only for inpatient medications. Without optional part D or a supplemental or Advantage Medicare plan you'll be on your own for paying for prescription needs. Medicare D plans don't have to cover every available drug, they only have to cover every type of drug.
